A small, cozy, intimate restaurant with just a few tables. We came on a Tuesday night without a reservation because it was all booked but were able to get seated. Great atmosphere and the staff are friendly. We ordered the PAPPARDELLE BOLOGNESE, SYLVAIN BURGER, and the PAN ROASTED STRIPED BASS. Everything was above average but most of the meat lacked in seasoning. The burger was definitely average and the fries were generously seasoned. The pasta had a strange aftertaste and wasn’t our favorite. And the bass also lacked in flavor. I’m sure this place is better than what we had tonight. Disappointed that we didn’t have a better experience, but I would give it a second try.
What a great experience! Greeted with a warm smile and great suggestions, the staff was attentive and super friendly. Food and drinks were fantastic. We had the burgers and chicken sandwich with some of the best fries we've had on this side of the Mississippi. Wonderful esthetic and lighting.
Cool atmosphere. It's Haunted 😃Fried green tomatoes appetizer is a must have. My husband gets the burger every time. Everything we've tried has been wonderful- Sylvains is in our regular rotation now
Fine dining in New Orleans is as much about the atmosphere as it is about the food. For a great dining experience we need both. Sylvain has both, which is what brings us here whenever we are in NOLA. A stroll down the narrow entrance alley opens to courtyard dining lit with strings of Edison bulbs and trimmed with greenery. An overhanging balcony intimitizes the space. Or make a left into the main dining room with cracked and decaying plaster wall (trust me, that’s a good thing), beamed ceiling, wooden tables and floor, and pre-Alaska and Hawaii American Flag. The bar is long and wood and old (again, a good thing). Our table shared the excellent cornbread and the crab dumplings, the latter of which was kind of a spicy gnocchi with a diablo-ish sauce. For mains I ordered the bass, two others in our party ordered the low and slow short ribs, and our fourth ordered the burger. The fish and ribs were excellent (though I would ditch the kale accompanying the bass), and my friend said she really liked the burger. We all shared and loved the Nutella dessert thing. The wine list offered a range of prices, especially in the lower range, where we like to buy.
I’m a local (former tourist). Sylvain is our go to for every celebration and life event. We also love popping in for a random weeknight. Sylvain has such a diverse staff, which is their strength in the quarter, where the menu is also diverse, fun and original! I highly recommend the chicken sandwich. It’s top tier and the pickles remind me of my great grandmothers freezer pickles! The flavour is *chefs kiss.* But honestly you’re in New Orleans for the vibes… this place is a beautifully appointed former historical residence of a madame… you’re getting history with every authentic pour of authentic ingredients. The windows of the main bar area face Chartres Street, a historical thoroughfare of the old city where jazz wafts in on the breeze. The location could not be better… and the wine selection and cocktail menu is here as a backup character to your weekend in America’s most European city. I post pictures and videos from Sylvain and my friends from all over the world ache to pull up a chair at this timeless bar, to indulge in a beautiful menu of southern influence, and to celebrate the traditions of the cocktail capital of the world. The staff and team are knowledgeable, friendly and warm- a perfect mix of southern hospitality and New Orleans charm. You won’t regret stopping in…. Sylvain is a treasure!
